MTN Nigeria, with a subscriber base of 84.61 million, has raised the prices of its data plans following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) recent approval of a 50% increase in telecom service costs.
According to company sources, the adjustments will be implemented in phases, with some data bundles remaining unaffected. An insider explained, “We are making the changes gradually, and certain plans will reflect the new pricing later this week. We also take into account different market segments. For example, low-income users who rely on 100MB solely for WhatsApp will not experience any price changes.”
At the moment, only MTN has adjusted its data rates, but other telecom providers such as Airtel and Globacom are expected to follow suit after the NCC granted approval on January 20, marking the first price hike in over a decade.
