In a statement over the weekend, MTN introduced its new biodegradable, paper-based SIM card, highlighting its environmental benefits. The company emphasized that this innovation supports responsible product lifecycle management, encouraging circularity and significantly reducing waste.
MTN further explained that phasing out plastic-based SIM cards is a critical step in tackling plastic pollution. The company underscored its commitment to integrating sustainable practices into its operations by continuously seeking eco-friendly solutions.
The initiative, launched in partnership with a local supplier, reflects MTN’s ongoing effort to empower Nigerian businesses while fostering economic growth through sustainable partnerships, the statement noted.
During the launch event at MTN’s Lagos office, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, compared the eco-friendly SIM cards with traditional plastic-based ones. He highlighted the ability of the biodegradable SIMs to naturally decompose, their recyclability, and the significant reduction in waste and carbon emissions during production and disposal.
Okigbo also pointed out that the new SIM cards help resolve key environmental issues associated with plastic SIM cards, such as landfill overcrowding, limited recycling options, and pollution from incineration.
General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value, Adekemi Adisa, added that MTN’s focus on both people and the environment drives its sustainability initiatives. She emphasized that the launch encourages customers to make eco-conscious choices, contributing to a greener future for Nigerians.
